Medicare and Centrelink one-stop shops for Melbourne’s West

Two one-stop shops offering Medicare and Centrelink services conveniently under the same roof will soon open in Melbourne’s West.

On Monday 22 February, all staff offering Medicare services from the service centre within the Highpoint Shopping Centre will relocate into service centres in Sunshine and Footscray.

Department of Human Services General Manager Hank Jongen said the department’s Sunshine Service Centre would move from its current location at Dickson Street into brand new premises on Harvester Road on the same day, to house the one-stop shop.

“The Footscray Service Centre on Moore Street will also undergo a minor update to its current layout, to accommodate the extra services,” Mr Jongen said.

“Creating one-stop shops in Sunshine and Footscray reflects the trend of delivering more government services from a single point, while also acknowledging significant changes in the way customers are choosing to claim their Medicare rebate these days.

“There has been a decline in the number of people visiting our service centres largely due to the move away from cash rebates for Medicare services in 2012, and the growing trend of doctors offering patients the ability to claim their rebate electronically at the surgery.

“Over the past three years, the number of people visiting the Highpoint Service Centre has reduced by nearly two thirds as people take advantage of claiming their Medicare benefit directly at the doctor’s surgery.

“Nationally, more than 96 per cent of all Medicare claims are now lodged electronically, most at the point of service, and I urge residents to check whether their doctor offers Medicare rebates over the counter.

“I also encourage local residents to check out the range of digital services available through myGov and the department’s range of Express Plus apps, which allow people to do their routine government business where and when it suits them.

“However, staff will always be available to provide face-to-face services to people who require more intensive or personalised support.”

The Footscray Service Centre is located at 75 Moore Street. From Monday 22 February, the Sunshine Service Centre will be located at 103 Harvester Road. Both service centres are open Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
