Communities and questions – What Social Media Day means to us

The Department of Human Services’ social media accounts reach more than 1.5 million people each month. On 30 June, our social media team will pause to celebrate World Social Media Day before their busiest period of the year.

“Social Media Day is a good way to recognise and celebrate social media’s impact on global communication,” Digital Media Director Natalie Manu said.

“The team won’t have much time to celebrate on the day though, as they’ll be working over the weekend to get a head start on a busy, busy time for us.

“This July, we’re expecting thousands of questions about balancing family payments to flood our Family Update Facebook account.”

Natalie said social media has changed communication.

“People now rely on social media to connect with family and friends all over the world,” she said. “They also use it to connect with businesses, banks and, increasingly, government departments.

“Our department uses social media to educate and inform customers about our payments and services.

“The team answer a whole range of questions. From general advice on payment eligibility, to tips on using self service and online accounts, we offer a great alternative to calling or visiting us.

“More than 270,000 people like or follow us on one of our 18 social media accounts and we handle around 12,000 questions and comments from the public each month. We’re expecting to see close to double the amount of posts coming in during our peak time in July.

“We’re always looking to improve how we do things by creating engaging, informative and relevant content for everyone who is part of our online communities.

“Seeing these online communities grow, evolve and support each other is very rewarding and definitely worth giving a little nod to on Social Media Day.”
